Public Campaign Finance Filings

updated 10/30/2013, 17:43 – fixed link to county campaign filings

Just so we’re all on the same page and everyone knows where to find this… I’ve downloaded the last few years worth of Laurie Smith’s campaign filings and linked them below (other than an amendment which I will try to get to the Clerk’s office to get a copy of at some point in the future) and you can find the remainder of her filings at Santa Clara County Campaign Filings, just search her name. There are three pages worth in total going back a number of years.  It’s interesting to peruse the names of her donors and know some of the inside information behind those relationships.

One of the most recent filings, I found very interesting.  It was from 2006, but filed in 2013 and was a payment to Gordon Beirsch Brewing in Las Vegas for food and drink for a fundraiser.  Interesting that it took her 7 years to file this and she was fundraising in Vegas — what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?  It makes me even more curious about that May 2009 event at Beirsch where she announced her political campaign… oh, oh, sorry, no that was the “First Annual Deputy Appreciation Night”, I’m sorry, not a campaign event.  Though I do see she covered her “victory party” there.  That would have been a little too obvious maybe.  Then, I thought I might have gotten the year wrong, but no, nothing anywhere.

The deputies that night were told it was about them and the food and beer and location was donated to them in appreciation for their services.  But let’s be honest, those of us there know it was all about the Sheriff announcing she was going to be running for office again and asking for their support. Those there know for a fact she gave a campaign speech, had political endorsers there and took collections and offers for volunteers for her campaign.  But finding record of it is a totally different story.  Four years later, there has never been a “Second Annual Deputy’s Appreciation Night.”

Now, on that same note, there used to be a link to Jim Cogan’s calendar at this url, but it seems to have been replaced by Pete Constant’s page (?!?).  On that calendar, on May 22, it listed “May 22, from 5PM to 8PM as a “Reception for Laurie Smith” at Gordon Beirsch Brewery.”  But now, strangely at that prior link we get Pete Constant‘s page and the public calendar is “poof!”  Now I can find a payment to the DSA for labels during that time frame, and a payment to her daughter (nepotism?  Really?  Yes, legal, but tasteless) but strangely, nothing about an event sponsored by or paid for at Gordon Beirsch.

But luckily, the internet is an archive of magical proportions.  You can find Jim Cogan’s calendar entry here, on page 64 showing the reception hosted by Sheriff Laurie.  It seems it was there as recently as January 24, 2012.  I love the internet.  I’m not 100% positive this is the same event, but I’m pretty sure.  I would be in debt if anyone still has a copy of the invitation that was sent out to the deputies for that event.

Anyway… on to the dry part… campaign finance filings.  Feel free to share any stories these bring to mind:
